Leech Lake — Cool Water, Hot Calendar
Labor Day still had one more loud weekend left in it when Leech Lake Tourism posted this, and the lake was already doing that September thing where the water gets colder and the fish start acting like they just remembered winter is real. Walleyes sliding back shallow. Muskies waking up. Evening bite stretching later like somebody forgot to punch the clock.
Gill’s walleye notes (Walker): jigs with crawlers or fathead minnows working 10–16 ft around Goose Island, the Snake Pit, and rock off Bear Island. Crankbaits and jigging Raps for covering water when fish are keyed on bait. Midday fish still hanging 12–16 ft on Greg’s Breakline and the Annex flats, then sneaking shallower as the sun drops. Muskie side of the ledger: shallow rock under 8 ft early and late, plus weed edges and rock-to-sand transitions; bucktails to search, bigger profile if you’re marking heavy fish. Panfish in the greenest cabbage and sand grass 6–9 ft in the bays; pike turning mean on windblown weed edges with spoons and spinnerbaits.
Bemidji Pioneer’s Sept. 2 Leech blurb lines up: more shallow walleye chatter in 8–12 ft, plus rocks 10–15 ft near Goose / Annex / Bear — with the honest dockside footnote that finding them on the screen has been easier than getting them to open their mouths some days. Classic Minnesota: the fish are there, they’re just emotionally unavailable until dusk.
